Make the day count.
Taking a mental health day may not be as easy for most as one may think. It’s one of the hardest things for any of us who tend to put family, our spouse/partner , children and work before ourselves. Taking a mental health day interestingly , can feel like another task if you tend to over think it , feel guilty (this is a big one) or incorporate household task, or errands that were put off . As a counselor this is even challenging . When I make a decision to take a mental health day, I start by exploring what truly allows me to feel happy, calm and relaxed.
Here are a few small key things that may help you take an effective mental health day. CREATE A PLAN: First Start discussing with those in your household your plans of taking a day or even a few hours off to your self. If you have a family or roommates that you live with, provide some guidance that you may need them to help with while you are taking your day. Similiar if you would to plan a vacation or a few days off from work .
discussing the in’s and out’s with them for coverage and such. For example, if you have child responsibilities plan for a babysitter , assistance from a spouse , or family for the day. This is also a great teaching opportunity to show your family the importance of self care and how self rebooting helps refresh the body, mind and soul. You can even create a calendar with them so they can each plan a mental health day for themselves . Be creative and make it fun.
Next, PLAN YOUR DAY. Have a list of things you want to do that day that brings you joy, maybe its going to the beach, laying by the pool, reading a great book in a quite place, writing a book, visiting a new coffee shop, taking a painting class, cooking class or even a spa day. Hey! The day is what ever you want it to be.
Second, Do not and I say this very clear DO NOT do any work duties. that means no grocery stores, running errands, paying bills , doing laundry etc. The day is not for chores, unless you really like it. Oh and one more thing, no social media, anything on your phone that can and will cause you stress. If it is important, those that know your day will have a special ring/code and only to be use in the case of a real emergency.
Lastly, Be Mindful. Oh I know, another tough one but, it can be done. Take in the fresh air, smell and taste that good cup of coffee, meal, or snack. Complement your self, manifest good things. Most importantly enjoy your day without guilt and simply Just breathe.
Remember that today nothing else matters but YOU! Everything else is and will be taken care of.
Until then..
Be well in heart and mind,
Christina-
